Assignment Process

Our success is based on a straightforward and transparent approach at all stages of every search

Executive Search is a structured recruitment process involving the research, identification, approach and attraction of precisely identified individuals.

As a professional Partnership, big enough to deliver but small enough to care, Parkinson Lee is always flexible, fitting around you and your requirements (and not the other way around). At the same time, the process will normally include the following stages for our clients:

  • 1. Briefing & Specification of Requirements

We take the utmost care to understand your business, your role, and the kind of person most likely to succeed.

This is agreed with you in our Specification of Requirements - a highly professional marketing document and reference point for the whole exercise.

  • 2. Identification & Approach

With a solid structure and sequence, we will then agree with you the Search strategy - identifying the sectors, companies and individuals, refining the targets and taking your views into account.

Our Researchers are chosen according to the individual Assignment; they are also dedicated specialists and take great pride in the precision and presentation of the Target Lists.

But at Parkinson Lee, we believe the first contact with the candidate is crucial. And so - unusually - that first approach is typically made not by the Researcher, but your Partner (who is accountable directly for the formation of both the Long and Short List of candidates).

  • 3. Our Interviews

As seasoned Search specialists, we know that no candidate is the same and every interview is different; at the start, for example, we have to assess and respect the individual motivation of the individual candidate (who may well not be looking to move in the first instance). The best interviews are therefore epitomised by intelligence, insight and intuition and in our specialist areas, ours are second to none.

With our judgements, we are therefore confident about those candidates combining the correct capabilities and cultural fit. But we are not complacent. Which is why we also conduct competency-based interviews (the questions for which can, once again, be influenced by your priorities and views).

And finally, if you'd like to conduct psychometric and wider assessments, we also retain a penetrating Occupational Psychologist with a broad range of tools and proprietary techniques.

  • 4. Your Interviews
Each shortlisted candidate is profiled with a detailed CV and written assessment - including the highlighting of any notable points of interest - and then discussed with you, typically in a face-to-face meeting.

We will then agree and arrange the interviews on your behalf.

If you so wish, we will also attend them. This is a distinctive commitment that offers a variety of benefits - some obvious and some subtle - and we will be pleased to discuss these with you. (Of course, the bottom line is, we won't waste your valuable time - or indeed ours - by shortlisting "possible fits" or mediocre candidates; your interviews will be pleasing and productive).
  • 5. Offer Management

In our pivotal role between you and your candidates, we work really hard to ensure that all parties are well informed and perfectly-positioned to participate in a precise process.

Communication is key and so is our typical contribution to the remuneration discussions, managing expectations, minimising mismatches and ensuring a positive outcome at the negotiation stage.

  • 6. The Follow Up

If you so wish, we will be pleased to take out formal references on the successful candidate on your behalf. (And before this, we always take out informal references and soundings on the final shortlisted candidates for you to consider).

In due course, we arrange at least one structured Review meeting or call with each client and new employee individually, to probe and verify and ensure that it's all "plain sailing".

And you'll also have the chance to tell us what you think: our Client Service Reviews are a continuing process to evaluate our performance and to avoid complacency.

With over 80 years combined experience, Parkinson|Lee are one of the most dynamic, professional and experienced teams of Search Consultants across Yorkshire

Parkinson Lee Executive Search, part of the Elevation Recruitment Group is acting as retained partner to Nationwide Hygiene Supplies Ltd (Nationwide) in the appointment of a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Nationwide is a company that was established in 1986 to secure and develop national account sales contracts for servicing by its 19 shareholder SME businesses. These shareholder companies between them own and manage a network of 35 branches throughout the UK and Ireland.

Since 2004 Nationwide has also been a shareholder in a European Joint Venture Company, INPACS GmbH, along with six other similar wholesaler groups across Europe. The JVC operates with a number of associated member companies and currently trades in 36 countries throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Australia. INPACS seeks to secure and develop international sales opportunities for each of its member companies within their own area of operation.
At the end of 2016 Nationwide’s account sales in the UK are expected to total £20.5m and the combined sales of all shareholder companies forecast to amount to over £170m. The figures for INPACS at the end of 2016 are forecast to exceed €2.2 billion, of which international corporate business sales will be in excess of €175m.

    • Maintain the operational integrity and governance of the group and to apply the agreed principles laid down in the articles of association and associated members handbook
    • Develop any future strategies that enhance the benefits of the shareholders, and to look for equitable solutions to any issues of conflict or disadvantage
    • Assist and facilitate any shareholder companies that wish to dispose of their businesses, and to seek ways of retaining their businesses within the Nationwide group (unless otherwise directed by the board).

    External Sales Management

    • Agree targets and sales sector development objectives for the Sales Director and his external sales team, that meet the strategic development goals set out in the group corporate plan
    • Make available all the necessary resources required to achieve target market development as well as the retention of existing contracts
    • Set contract margin targets and to assist the Sales Director in negotiations with key suppliers, and any product changes needed to help achieve these targets
    Purchasing
    • Direct the Purchasing Manager in the attainment of agreed objectives which aim to deliver improved and competitive terms with existing suppliers.
    • Assist in the identification of appropriate new supply arrangements that will benefit and enhance the shareholders current buying arrangements.
    • Assist the purchasing manager in developing centralised efficiencies and added value services through central arrangements, for the benefit of shareholders
    Marketing
    • Lead the Marketing Manager in the development of programmes and communication initiatives that promote the business and its capabilities to the target markets
    • Enhance inter-group communications and develop web site features and capability
    Finance
    • Work with the Financial Controller in managing the flow of funds through the business and to act as the primary signatory to the company’s lines of credit and finance
    • Evaluate, where necessary, alternative and additional means of finance for special projects as and when they arise, including acquisition finance if required
    • Presenting the financial and operating data to the board and the quarterly shareholder meetings
    • Agreeing the annual accounts with the auditors and their presentation to shareholders for approval at the AGM

The successful candidate will be an experienced business leader (Senior Director, MD or CEO) and ideally, although not essentially with experience gained within the logistics/distribution sector. The successful candidate must, however, understand wholesale B2B distribution.

Previous experience of business restructuring, transformation and modernisation is expected, as is a solid financial capability. You will be a confident, professional and credible leader, and possess the gravitas and inter personal skills necessary to build stakeholder relationships quickly and influence at board level.

In addition, you will be a high energy individual with passion and drive, and an inspirational leader and figurehead with the ambition to continue the outstanding success and growth that Nationwide has demonstrated over the last two decades.

  • Kingston Unity Friendly Society - Chairman

Our relatively small Financial Services organisation recently had the task of finding a new CEO to take over from the previous incumbent who was retiring. As a small mutual, we had specific requirements, requiring a CEO with broad experience, but primarily one that could drive a small but ambitious business forward, with the appropriate business & marketing acumen & expertise. Clearly finding the right person was vital for our business to succeed in the future.

We short-listed a number of recruitment agencies & formed a sub committee of 3 NED's who met with Lee after he had received our brief. He immediately demonstrated he had a good understanding of our business & business model, & that he fully grasped our requirements. In fact he helped us formulate the key attributes from the job spec we had provided. We were all impressed & unanimously decide to use Parkinson Lee.

Lee then outlined the likely timetable for short-listing candidates for first & second interviews, which I must admit I felt was slightly ambitious. However the timetable was virtually met, and more importantly, every candidate submitted (6 in all) had the capabilities to do a really good job as our CEO. We were impressed & delighted by the calibre of candidates submitted. We've completed our selection & we are awaiting our new CEO to complete his notice period before joining us in the new year. The whole process will have taken just 5 months, including a 3-month notice period. That's about as good as we had hoped for.

I personally worked closely with Lee, and found him always to be professional, readily available, responsive, & informative - all of his suggestions were well reasoned and adopted.

Therefore I have no hesitation in recommending Lee for any Executive search, including the "top job", as was the case with our recruitment.

Rob Edwards - Chairman of Kingston Unity

  • Nationwide Hygiene Group - Chief Executive Officer

We recently engaged Parkinson Lee to undertake an executive search and selection process to replace the role of Chief Executive Officer in our company. Their efficiency and professionalism in executing the task was first class. Lee Bhandal handled the search and managed to produce an excellent shortlist of candidates for interview from an initial applicant list of over 300 individuals and an offer has now been made and accepted for the role.

We were particularly impressed with the quality of the detailed job profile that was produced by Parkinson Lee which we believe attracted not only the large response received but also the high calibre of respondents for this important role.

We would have no hesitation in recommending Parkinson Lee to any prospective client.

    David Scholes

    Chief Executive Officer

  • Kingston Unity Friendly Society - Chief Executive Officer
  • CrystecPharma - Chief Executive Officer

CrystecPharma is a start-up company focused on enhancing the performance of pharmaceutical products. We have a strong management team, operating across the UK and China, individually with good business track records.

We therefore required a highly experienced and credible business mentor, who could work well with senior people, provide support, yet have the confidence and credentials to challenge where necessary. Phil has been an outstanding mentor over the past year. He has an engaging style, strong intellect, a breadth of experience across sectors, and he operates with a high degree of professional integrity.

He has helped us to hold our course and maintain focus in difficult trading conditions, whilst encouraging us to be open to new opportunities, individually and as a business. He has been an excellent source of new ideas and contacts for the company. Whilst we have much to do, I am sure that Crystec is on a more firm footing as a consequence of Phil’s support. He has been a genuine pleasure to work with, and I commend him to you without reservation.

    Paul Thorning - CEO

  • Berryman Glass Recycling - Chief Executive Officer

    Peter Crowder - Managing Director

  • Hargreaves Industrial Services - Managing Director

We approached Parkinson Lee for the recruitment of a Finance Director on recommendation from a colleague. Lee Bhandal, Managing Partner, met with us personally to discuss our requirement. Lee was easy to deal with; approachable, efficient, reliable and knowledgeable, he listened and took on board our specific requirements. The CVs we were provided with matched our requirement in terms of experience and qualifications, having chosen 6 for interview, we were not disappointed to also find a match in personality requirements. Our successful candidate has now joined the business and settled in well. I would personally recommend Parkinson Lee for high level recruitment and look forward to working with Lee in the future.

    Julie Haynes - Managing Director

  • UK Coal Plc - Human Resources Director

Working as Human Resources Director for UK Coal Plc whilst the company was delivering a challenging financial turnaround, I struggled to attract candidates for key business critical roles. Lee Bhandal at Parkinson|Lee Executive Search was recommended to me by a member of the Board as a highly credible and well respected Executive Search Consultant, with the ability to understand the sector in which the organisation operated.

He quickly grasped the organisational strategy, performance goals (some linked to government), market factors and essentially how to translate it all into an attractive proposition for candidates.

Lee’s candidate search, analysis and assessments resulted in a shortlist of individuals with superb professional, technical and commercial capabilities, who were all fully briefed and engaged in the process.

Several executive appointments were made across the Group from Lee’s recommendations, greatly strengthening the function and the organization structure at this critical time.

I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending Lee Bhandal at Parkinson|Lee to any organisation looking to strength there senior management team via a search specialist.

  • Eaton Electrical Systems Limited - Finance Director

Dean has been an absolute pleasure to work with in my job search, resulting in me being placed in a role that directly matches my skill-set. He worked tirelessly behind the scenes on my behalf, from securing the initial interview to the final acceptance of offer. Dean's dedication, attention to detail and comprehensive post-interview follow-up were outstanding.

I have since started to work with Dean and his team as a client and found their service to be equally impressive.

I look forward to continuing to work with Dean and would recommend his services without hesitation.

Lal Amarasekara - Finance Director at Eaton Electrical Systems Limited

  • James Heal - Finance Director

We were recently looking to appoint a Finance Director based at our Head Office in Halifax.

We approached a number of Executive Search consultants including Lee Bhandal at Parkinson Lee on the back of a recommendation. We were immediately impressed with Lee’s professionalism, understanding of our brief and the in-depth knowledge and experience of the market he demonstrated at our initial meeting.

We awarded Parkinson Lee the mandate and I have to say we were delighted with both the process and the result.
Lee worked closely with us at the outset to define the role profile and then committed fully to the search, keeping us in the loop throughout the search.

The process took just over 5 weeks as agreed at the outset and we were impressed with the quality of all shortlisted candidates, and in particular the candidate that we hired as a result. The shortlist once again highlight Lee’s detailed understanding of both our business and the brief.

We had an initial briefing meeting to scope out the position and Lee recommended an advertised search campaign.  At this stage we felt confident in both Lee’s market knowledge, which is exceptional and also his ability to fully understand our business, what we needed and the right solution at a cost effective price. The recruitment piece was relatively complex as it required interaction not only with UK representatives of Powell but also colleagues in Houston, Texas.

The process ran to the timescales Lee had suggested and he worked in partnership with us throughout, delivering a highly professional and quality service at all times.

Parkinson|Lee provided us with a shortlist of outstanding candidates that not only matched the role profile but also matched our business culture, values and goals.  We could have appointed one of a number of the shortlisted individuals but were delighted when our chosen candidate accepted the position.

We would also add that the candidates we interviewed have given us very positive feedback in relation to how they feel they have been managed by Parkinson|Lee Executive Search from a candidate perspective.

  • 20/03/2017 Thought leadership - how to become a thought leader
Earning a reputation as a thought leader is not easy. After all, it’s not going to be handed to you on a plate and therefore hard work is likely to be a pre-requisite.

That said, once you have captured the ‘ear’ of those in your industry or region (or wherever it is that you want to be seen as an expert and innovative thinker), it can be a highly valuable position – with thought leaders by their very nature incredibly well connected having earnt masses of respect from their chosen audience (and beyond, in some cases).

But how can one set about on this particular journey?

    Avoid the bandwagon

The first step is to be prepared to go against the grain – have an original thought! Jumping on the bandwagon will not a thought leader make… That said, authenticity is also key – don’t simply say the opposite to others for the sake of it. All that will earn is a reputation for being inflammatory and unnecessarily controversial.

Simply engaging in discussion with influencers in your field and understanding what is being discussed in the first instance will be a good starting point.

Make the most of social media

Social media now plays a huge role in becoming recognised as a thought leader. Ask yourself if all of your social media profiles (including those you consider only to be for personal use…) are consistent with your ‘personal brand’.

If you see yourself as a serious, professional and hardworking person, ask yourself if your various profiles are consistent with that; and try to be your harshest critic!

Publishing articles on Linkedin and blog posts on your website will get your name out there and associated with a particular topic will help to establish your position as a thought leader within your field. Be careful though not to appear to be too much of a ‘Jack of all trades, master of none’.

Producing regular (and regularity is important) content about various issues within one subject area, for example the Northern Powerhouse, is preferable to commenting on an infinite number of topics with very little depth.  Once you’ve gained respect in a particular area, you can then look to expand your niche.

    Be a prolific networker

As well as utilising any online presence you have, actually attending networking events in person is still extremely powerful, even in this digital age. The more real connections you have, the more your reputation will grow; and as you become an established member of a networking group (or several) you may be invited to speak and share your expertise and opinions, thoughts and ideas.

In terms of networking, it will also be extremely useful to you to build relationships with members of the media. You may be called upon to comment on current affairs and major developments in your industry or geographical area – if you’re not sure where to start with this, engaging with a PR agency will aid those introductions, as well as the wider ‘thought leadership’ objective.

You should also show off about any high-impact (relevant) affiliations you have – maybe you were formally employed by one of the Big Four, or attended a prestigious university, or have at some point been trained or taught by a world-renowned person in their field.

If you have experience and connections that could help further your reputation and credibility as a thought leader, don’t be afraid to use it.
  • 06/03/2017 Building an effective network

It is widely acknowledged that having a well-rounded network is key for senior executives looking to cement their position within an industry, and indeed for continued self-development. Not only can they provide invaluable support – it’s tough at the top as they say - but having a key group of contacts around you who can provide advice and guidance can prove to be a great asset.

For many senior executives and business leaders, this network has formed organically over time, but for those still looking to achieve a fait accompli, you may want to ensure that your network includes one of more of each of the following:

    A mentor/coach

Your mentor should be someone who you hope to emulate, and who you consider to have more wisdom and experience than you do yourself; and to that end the role should be filled by someone with whom you can be completely open and honest.

It is of no use to have a mentor who you feel self-conscious around, or feel you must try to impress – they have to see you at your lowest ebbs in order to provide you with any valuable support.

In this sense, they might also become something of a ‘coach’; providing you with guidance around tough decisions and during transitionary periods. They can help you to fine-tune any plans you might have as well as have the ability to keep your feet firmly on ‘Real Street’.

    An expert

It’s crucial to have an expert in your field of work within your network who will be something of a sounding-board for new ideas and potential plans. They will also act as an extra pair of eyes and ears, ensuring you are on top of developments in the industry, and in some instances might even be ahead of the curve – what you hear from them will enable you to position yourself as a thought-leader, and keep your conversations interesting!

    A ‘match-maker’

The match-maker in your network needs to be very well connected themselves – to people, information and resource. The people who take on this kind of role are natural networkers and social butterflies.  If you need help to solve a problem or issue they may not know the answer, but they will certainly know the person who does.

    A mentee

Perhaps most crucially, you should also look to act as someone’s mentor. Not only is this paying back in some way, but it will also help you to stay in check yourself by providing something of a mirror. In order to successfully uphold the mentor role you need to have a robust understanding of your industry and key issues as well as holding you accountable when making tough decisions and facing obstacles – you are setting an example, after all.
  • 02/03/2017 Asset Based Finance - Is It Right For Your Business?
The rise of asset based finance: is it right for your business?

Asset Based Finance Association (ABFA) CEO, Jeff Longhurst, examines the drivers of continued growth in asset based finance, and outlines the unique support it offers to expanding businesses.

More and more UK businesses are securing asset based finance to help them unlock growth. In fact, usage of asset based lending and invoice finance has reached an all-time high in Britain with the UK consistently boasting the biggest uptake of pure invoice finance in the world.

Why is asset based finance growing in popularity?

The economic and political uncertainty caused by June’s EU referendum result was undoubtedly a contributing factor to this impressive growth.

Businesses are concerned about the prospect of longer payment delays and higher import costs given the weak pound. Decision-makers are therefore looking for new ways to leverage their assets to provide a continued source of working capital, and as a result asset based finance is growing in popularity.

    What is new?

Innovation is also playing an important role in the continued growth of asset based finance, with ABFA members looking at lending against assets such as brand or intellectual property (IP) as well as traditional stock and machinery. While pure invoice discounting and factoring account for around 80% of the UK’s asset based finance market, the rapidly-expanding area of asset based lending now contributes 20%.

What is the role of asset based lending?

ABFA sees a number of reasons why more businesses are turning to asset based lending. For example, as a form of alternative finance, it is playing an important role in filling the funding gap that many companies currently face. This includes being used more strategically as part of a blended funding package to support mergers and acquisitions, and growth generally.

The Government’s Bank Referral Scheme, which was launched in November 2016, also seems certain to increase awareness of – and access to – asset based lending, and particularly invoice finance.

Under the scheme, nine of the UK’s biggest banks must pass on the details of any business whose funding needs cannot be supported through traditional methods to three platforms where alternative sources of finance can be offered. This includes invoice finance and asset based lending.

    How might businesses benefit?

Of course, asset based finance, whether that’s lending against debtors through invoice finance, property, equipment or stock, isn’t right for every company or every situation. If a business is simply looking for a short-term fix, or isn’t specifically seeking growth, there are perhaps more suitable sources of funding.

But if a business is looking for cash to help strategically at any stage in its life cycle – from the minute the first invoice is raised, to the moment the company is sold on – then asset based finance could offer a strategic solution to getting the right amount of working capital and helping to unlock growth.

Where next for asset based finance?

Given the benefits on offer and the perfect storm of market conditions, the momentum behind asset based finance looks set to build. Furthermore, as the Government’s Bank Referral Scheme takes off and asset based lending matures, our hope is that even more businesses will take advantage of asset based finance to achieve their growth ambitions.

Is asset based finance right for you?

    Benefits of invoice finance

    Speed

Take advantage of rapid, usually on the day of submission, access to the cash tied up in sales invoices.

    Certainty

Stabilise cash flow by reducing uncertainty – bad debt protection is available too.

    Timely

Overcome the problem of late payments and free up business time normally spent chasing payments.

    Scalable

Grow your working capital in line with your sales.

    Benefits of asset based lending

    Protects equity

By leveraging assets more effectively, asset based lending offers the ability to raise significant funds without sacrificing equity.

    Price

Compares favourably to traditional funding methods, whilst releasing significantly more capital.

    Cost-effective

Improve your working capital and turn your assets into cash to support your plans.

    Scalable

Your available finance grows in line with your business. It can be used as part of a wider funding package for growth.

    Flexible

Manage cash flow fluctuations and respond to your business needs.

    Diverse

Raise funding on assets not typically allowed as security on a classic loan.
  • 27/02/2017 The Evolving Role of a Financier
In response to an ever evolving (arguably unpredictable) market, the CFO’s role has evolved. No longer responsible solely for running a tight ship when it comes to financial operations, increasingly they are expected to don many caps – specifically when it comes to developing strategy and determining key business initiatives, as well as crisis management during times of economic uncertainty.

In a report by EY, in which one-on-one interviews were conducted with CFOs in top US organisations, it was found that CFOs ‘increasingly contribute to organizational strategy, and are meeting unprecedented demand for their unique perspective and discipline.’ They are more likely to contribute to operational decision making, for example managing or supporting technology, investor relations, real estate and strategic M&A. However, while the job description may be expanding, respondents unanimously agreed that fundamental skills in finance are imperative to success in the role.

Business Finance magazine summarised the six principal activities of today’s CFO as:

    ·       Ensuring business decisions are grounded in solid financial criteria.

    ·       Providing insight and analysis to support the CEO and other senior managers.

    ·       Leading key initiatives in finance that support overall strategic goals.

    ·       Funding, enabling and executing the strategy set by the CEO.

    ·       Developing and defining the overall strategy for the organization.

    ·       Representing the organization's progress on strategic goals to external stakeholders.

While the amount of time individuals allocate to each point varies between organisations, CFOs worldwide agreed that this was a fair representation of their key responsibilities.

    Adjusting to Industry Trends

A survey of 200 CFOs in the UK found that priorities are likely to change over the next three years. CFOs listed their top short term priority as ‘meeting regulatory compliance mandates,’ with ‘harnessing and managing big data’ as their fourth priority. However, by 2020, most CFOs predict that their priorities will be evolving side-by-side with industry trends, with ‘keeping pace with changing technology’ their top priority and ‘harnessing and managing big data’ in second place.

Though organisations may be working at a high level with data analysis, more efficient systems are coming into play which could see a boost in productivity and savings. In digitising the finance function, replacing these systems is at the top of most CFO’s plans. However, this will not be without its challenges, with many CFOs citing a technology limitations as a significant issue in the UK. Technological awareness, and keeping one step ahead of the latest developments, is becoming almost as fundamental to the role of a CFO as the core background in finance.

    Contributions to Strategy

With organisations facing marketing volatility and economic uncertainty, CFOs are increasingly providing financial advice to support boardroom decisions. This is likely to become even more crucial in the economic instability following Brexit. A CFO’s contributions to strategy discussions can often concern capital structure, especially in redeploying income from overseas transactions.

CFOs are in a unique position within the centre of their organisations, with the ability to gather information from disparate parts of the company. A CFO will interact with, and therefore provide an accurate insight into, every element of the business.

“I now help to identify areas of growth that the company may not have thought about and can prioritise what can be accelerated,” explains Tracey Travis, CFO at Ralph Lauren.

    Company Culture / Soft Skills

The modern day CFO faces a challenge in that, while he/she is brought into a wider decision-making remit, he/she may be faced with resistance within the organisation which must be managed accordingly.

Individuals or groups may believe that a CFO does not have the expertise to make decisions on their areas of the business.

Peter Simons, Head of Future Finance Research at CIMA Global, said: “The biggest challenge is that a CFO does not have either the credibility or the mandate to suggest change. However, if they can show the business how to make money, save money and/or remain compliant, they will be invited back to the table again and again.”

Solid financial skills, therefore, are not the only fundamental requirements to the role. A CFO must be able to facilitate collaboration between departments and to persevere when their initiatives are met with resistance. To do this, a CFO must be a great communicator and leader, with excellent empathy and rapport for their colleagues.

Since the financial crisis, increased pressure is put on CFOs to provide clear and accurate financial guidance to stakeholders. CFOs must ensure they are able to convey complex financial information in simple, effective terms; not just within their organisation, but to external vendors and investors. Bruce Besanko, CFO of OfficeMax, comments: “That's a skill that's absolutely essential and one that can be developed -- but it takes practice.”

In the wake of the financial crisis, it’s more essential than ever that a CFO has the leadership skills to create a well-functioning department and to ensure that its finance professionals are working effectively. As finance managers, it is also important to ensure that one’s own good reputation contributes to the trustworthiness of the business, to ensure stakeholders believe in the financial health of the business.

  • 16/02/2017 Achieving a work life blend - not a balance
The concept of a ‘work-life balance’ will be familiar to most, and yet it’s fairly safe to say that it has become increasingly outdated; and not to mention unrealistic.

Few of us are governed by the same regimented 9-5 existence that was once considered the norm, with many CEOs working well in excess of 60 hours per week (and that’s not including the time spent thinking: how to win that deal; how to fix internal issues; how to recruit).

And yet still many of us aspire, dream and plan for the days when we reach that all-important 50-/50 balance.  But to what end? Surely the end-goal is to do what you love 100% of the time – whether at work, taking part in your favourite hobby, or hanging out with family or friends.

Here, our CEO and founder Greg Parkinson talks to us about setting aside the old adage in favour or a new concept – the work-life blend.

“For a small few, the proverbial ‘balance’ may just work, but if you’re doing what you love and have achieved success in your field, then your work truly forms a part of who you are, doesn’t it?

“Regardless, push non-tangibles aside and surely all of us are aware that technological advancements now mean that we’re never fully ‘switched off’ anyway - particularly when operating at executive level.

“Arguably, once you have found peace with that particular bit of earth shattering news it becomes prudent to aim for a blend as opposed to a balance (as endorsed by the likes of Waitrose…), doesn’t it?”

Parkinson goes on to explain that in reality, for the vast majority of senior leaders, life can’t be boxed into ‘work’ and ‘life’ – trying to do this creates conflict both internally and externally in all of the various areas of our lives. Instead, there should be a focus on designing one’s life according to what’s important to us as individuals.

He says: “The ultimate objective of this ‘blend’ approach is not to self-indulge, but rather to drive engagement and productivity.

“The official Open Blend Method was founded by Anna Rasmussen following an idea she had whilst on maternity leave and contemplating how she was going to incorporate both her work as a leadership coach and motherhood successfully into her life.

“Since then, it has been adopted by progressive businesses and leaders – male and female alike - who recognise a direct correlation between an employee’s wellbeing, and their ability to understand what is important to them as individuals in all aspects of their life.”

And whilst some may prefer to continue to aspire to a perfect life-work balance, shutting down all thoughts of work when they leave and not switching back on until they arrive refreshed and refocused the following morning, for the most part people are looking for a more viable alternative.

Greg Parkinson, who established the Elevation Recruitment Group in 2010 and launched its executive search arm Parkinson Lee in 2014, said: “Now for those of you reading this and wondering ‘what’s the ROI?’ of this new-fangled ‘blend’ approach, it’s worth noting that research carried out by Gallup (a global performance-management consulting company) cited that disengagement (including low energy & low motivation) costs businesses £59,059,400,000 per year; which becomes much easier to understand when you learn that a paltry 13% of employees worldwide say they feel connected to their work.

“As is the case for most senior leaders and decision makers in business, retaining quality staff to help drive up productivity levels and reduce operational costs accordingly is a pretty fundamental part of the role, so that’s an eye opening figure.

“Taking this approach is also conducive to a greater level of self-actualisation. Achievements become the focus as opposed to time being the number one indicator of our success – this allows real, valuable ‘work’ to take place and, in turn, reduces the effect of any ‘politics’ as well as the burden of guilt some may feel for wanting to dedicate a portion of their life to work.

“It might be that, for you, the elements of your blend are building networks; your role and work in general; establishing yourself as a thought leader in your field; physical achievements such as a marathon; and being present with your family. There is no correct blend (and nor does it need to be static…). In fact, it needs to be totally bespoke for it to be at all useful.

“The idea is that once you have identified your ideal blend you’ll be more engaged and productive in each and every area of your life, and surely that will result in a happier you all round!”
